Gospel Reflection for June 9, 2013, 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus saw a widow crying as the body of her only son was being carried out.

Luke 7.14-15

Jesus came forward and touched the coffin, and the bearers halted. “Young man, I tell you, arise,” said Jesus. The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

Unlike many suppliants in the gospels, the widow doesn’t ask for help. Who could imagine help is even possible? Her plight moves Jesus to compassion. He acts out his mission as not only herald but agent of the year of God’s favor, the jubilee year. He raises up her son.

Who do you see acting as an agent of God’s favor on behalf of the vulnerable people in your family, parish, or community?
