Current Music and the Gospel: “I Won’t Give Up,” Jason Mraz

“I Won’t Give Up,” Jason Mraz, Love is a Four Letter Word, Atlantic Records

Gospel Reflection for October 7, 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Jesus’ words about divorce can be difficult to understand for those of us who have experienced divorces in our families. As we explore what this means to us today, we know that Jesus’ teachings always lead us to love and compassion for each other, even those who are struggling in the relationships. “I Won’t Gie Up” is about the commitment it takes to keep a relationship strong in the face of forces that can break it apart.

Key Lines: I don’t wanna be someone who walks away so easily/I’m here to stay and make the difference that I can make/Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use/The tools and gifts we got yeah, we got a lot at stake

Questions: Who are some examples of strong marriages or relationships that you know? How do marriage and other relationships require us to be Christ-like? How can differences strengthen a relationship? In what ways can they make relationships harder? What are some of the reasons that people seek divorce? What do you think Jesus would think of those reasons?
