Gospel Reflection for July 22, 2012, 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When the apostles returned from their first mission, Jesus tried to help them get to an isolated place so they could rest. They couldn’t escape the crowds.

As he went ashore, Jesus saw a great crowd. He had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He began to teach them many things.

Mark 6.34

Crowds follow the disciples after their first mission as they follow Jesus. Neither Jesus nor those he sends on mission can get a needed rest. Jesus cannot shut off his compassion. People’s hunger for his teaching and healing keeps swelling. Mark writes this gospel 40 years after the disciples’ first mission. What concerns the writer is the mission and who will continue the work Jesus began. Mark writes to call forth new disciples.

What is a way you continue Jesus’ mission in your family life?
