A Gospel Reflection for March 4, Second Sunday of Lent

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them an order, “Tell no one what you have seen until the Son of man has risen from the dead.”
Mark 9.9

Sunday’s gospel tells the story of Jesus’ transfiguration.  Shortly before he leads Peter, James, and John up the mountain, Jesus makes his disciples aware that he faces suffering and death in Jerusalem.  His ministry is turning from preaching and healing in Galilee to confronting religious authorities in Jerusalem.

Not only Jesus changes in the transfiguration story.  Something also happens to the disciples who accompany him up the mountain.  His caution, “Don’t tell anyone about this,” suggests that they have experienced a real shift in their understanding.  Life at the foot of the mountain will test their vision.
